Abstract

Long-term digital library archiving presents challenges fundamentally different from those of physical preservation. This article examines the principal obstacles, including the fragility of digital storage media, technological obsolescence, the recurrent costs of preservation, legal and ethical constraints, and the sheer volume and heterogeneity of digital content. It then surveys the strategies institutions have developed in response, such as migration and emulation, redundancy and geographic distribution, checksum verification, format registries, and metadata standards like PREMIS, alongside guiding frameworks including the Open Archival Information System reference model and the ISO 16363 standard for trustworthy digital repositories. The article emphasizes that technical infrastructure alone is insufficient without organizational commitment, skilled personnel, supportive policies, and sustained collaboration. Emerging trends, including artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and climate change, are considered as forces shaping future practice. The article concludes that long-term digital archiving is not a problem with a final solution but an ongoing commitment requiring continuous adaptation and a profound sense of responsibility to future generations.
