Instructions for Authors
Thank you for considering the European Review of Contemporary Arts and Humanities as a platform for your research. Our mission is to advance scholarly dialogue across the arts and humanities, and we are committed to a fair, rigorous, and author-friendly publication process. These guidelines are designed to help you prepare your submission in accordance with our standards. Please read them carefully before submitting your manuscript.
Aims and Scope
Before submitting, please ensure your work aligns with the journal’s focus. Journal welcomes innovative, interdisciplinary, and critical scholarship on:
- Music, theater, fine arts, literature, film, design, and cultural studies.
- Intersections between traditional and contemporary artistic practices.
- The role of the arts in social transformation, identity formation, and heritage preservation.
We publish original research articles, critical reviews, and artistic research statements.
Article Types
Original Research - Full-length, peer-reviewed articles presenting substantial, original research.
Artistic Research - Submissions that integrate creative practice with critical reflection; may include non-textual components.
Critical Review- In-depth reviews of recent exhibitions, performances, books, or films.
Manuscript Preparation
Formatting
File Format - Submit in Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx). All text must be editable.
Language - British or American English is accepted, but usage must be consistent throughout.
Font - Garamond, 13-point, 1.15-spaced.
Margins - 2 cm on all sides.
Structure
Your manuscript should be organized as follows:
Title - Concise and descriptive.
Author Information - Full names, institutional affiliations (or city/country for independent scholars), ORCID iDs, and the corresponding author’s email address.
Abstract - A single paragraph of 250 words or fewer, summarizing the research question, methodology, key arguments, and significance.
Keywords - 5-7 keywords, separated by commas.
Main Text - Use clear, descriptive headings (e.g., Introduction, Methodology, Analysis, Conclusion). Avoid numbered section headings (e.g., 1., 1.1.) unless essential for complex structure.
Acknowledgements - Include here any funding information, research ethics approvals, or personal acknowledgements.
References - Follow the Chicago Author-Date style (see Section 6).
Advanced Publishing & Open Science Practices
As a forward-thinking journal, we encourage practices that enhance transparency, reproducibility, and accessibility.
Open Data and Materials
We strongly encourage authors to deposit their research data, interview transcripts (anonymized), code, or other supporting materials in a trusted repository (e.g., Zenodo, Figshare, Harvard Dataverse). A Data Availability Statement must be included in the acknowledgements section. For example:
“The interview data supporting this study are openly available in [Repository Name] at [DOI/Permalink].”
Preprints
We support the sharing of preprints. Authors may deposit an earlier version of their manuscript on a preprint server (e.g., Humanities Commons, SocArXiv) before or during submission. This does not constitute prior publication. Please cite the preprint in your submission cover letter.
Inclusive Language and Naming
Authors are expected to use inclusive, non-discriminatory language. Use gender-neutral terms (e.g., “humanity” rather than “mankind”) and respect the preferred terminology of the communities, cultures, or artists discussed. For co-authored work, we accept the use of CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy) to specify individual contributions (e.g., Conceptualization, Writing - Original Draft, Visualization).
Artificial Intelligence Policy
No AI tools may be listed as co-authors. The use of generative AI must be disclosed transparently in the Acknowledgements section, specifying the tool, the version, and the extent of its use (e.g., for language editing, idea generation, or image creation). The author(s) remain fully responsible for the originality, accuracy, and integrity of the work.
Peer Review Process
Journal operates a double-anonymous peer review process. Both the reviewers and the authors remain anonymous to each other.
Preparing for Anonymity
To facilitate this, you must prepare a separate Anonymous Manuscript File:
- Remove all author names, affiliations, and any direct acknowledgements.
- Remove any references to your own prior work that would identify you. Instead, cite your own work in the third person (e.g., “As previously discussed (Smith, 2020)…”).
- Ensure document properties (author name in the file metadata) are cleared.
The Title Page (with author details) and the Anonymous Manuscript (without author details) must be uploaded as separate files.
Citation and Referencing Style
Use the Chicago Author-Date system.
- In-text - (Author Last Name Year, Page) Example: (Bishop 2012, 45)
- Reference List - Alphabetical by author’s last name.

Visual, Audiovisual, and Multimedia Content
Given our focus on the arts, submissions may include visual and audiovisual components.
- Images - Provide high-resolution files (300 DPI, TIFF or JPEG) separately from the text. Obtain all necessary permissions for copyrighted works. A permission statement must be included in the captions.
- Audiovisual - For time-based media (video, sound), we accept links to stable, archival repositories (e.g., Vimeo with password, institutional repository). Ensure links are set to “unlisted” or are provided with a password, and will remain active through the review process and upon publication.
- Alternative Text (Alt Text) - For all images, you must provide descriptive alt text for accessibility and discoverability. This should be included in the figure caption file.
Ethical Compliance
All research involving human subjects must have received appropriate institutional ethics approval. A statement of ethics approval (including the approving body and protocol number) must be included in the manuscript. Plagiarism, data fabrication, and duplicate submission are strictly prohibited. All submissions are screened for originality using similarity-check software.
Submission Process
All manuscripts must be submitted electronically through our online submission portal.
The submission package must include:
- Cover Letter - Addressed to the Editor-in-Chief, summarizing the significance of the work, confirming it is not under consideration elsewhere, and disclosing any potential conflicts of interest.
