Abstract

This article analyses the role of the Kashgar rubab in traditional maqom ensembles using historical, organological, and performance criteria. The aim of the study is to clarify the instrument’s functions in expressing maqom melodies, enriching the ensemble sound, coordinating with usul (a rhythmic cycle), and accompanying the singer. Source analysis, comparison, and a functional approach were used to examine literature on maqom studies, instructional manuals on rubab performance, and information on documented performance.
